Side charging rather than directly taking the impact.Ĭharging off first with your own cavalry. They might have a stacked charge bonus but a melee is not their strength and even general's bodyguards with their extra hit point will feel the pain soon. Mercenary/militia spears to take the charge (ultimately expendable) followed by a second unit charging in to bog them down and keep them from withdrawing.

STUPIDLY expensive, like your economy can be determined by the cycle of keeping your knights in the free upkeep slots in peacetime and mobilizing them for war. So, cavalry in Stainless Steel is counterbalanced by the following: Losing a unit of knights is a pain when it can take a decade for them to regenerate the AI's horses are strong, but so are yours, and it all evens out pretty well. Mind you, Stainless Steel absolutely buffs cav's stats, but it nerfs the rate at which castles generate them as well.

  • You can hole up in a town and laugh at the guys on horses.
  • You can designate a sacrificial unit and then fight a 'fair' melee battle the AI doesn't cycle charge all that well.
  • Hills, forests, and other terrain fucks cavalry over more than other troops.
  • The solution, then, lies in some avenues of counterplay. Of course they're going to lose out against heavily armored knights charging them down.

The units you talk about in Medieval 2 are likely basic spear militia: poorly trained, shorter spears, not professional at all. The yari ashigaru you mention consistently are voted as the best unit in Shogun 2 TW, and for good reason: they are professionals armed with pikes. Am I doing something wrong here? Is this just how Medieval II is? I know I spammed out stacks of yari ashigaru without complaining in Shogun 2, but at least the yari wall formation being almost impenetrable makes logical sense - this just seems stupid. This is very different from Shogun 2, where Royal Guard units could just barely defeat a unit of basic Yari Ashigaru. Essentially, it seems like the best strategy for the early game is to just charge your general bodyguard into the enemies to quickly rout them, because the armour on the bodyguards seems to make them night indestructible. I have played Medieval II for a fairly short time (30 hours, completed two campaigns), and now I've come back to it with the Stainless Steel mod, and while the gameplay generally feels like how I remember Medieval II feeling, one thing that's throwing me off is the power of the cavalry: The General Bodyguard unit can beat basic spearmen with a charge.
